For many homeowners, the thought alone is enough to cause headaches. It's no secret that home remodeling is a complex, tiring, and often costly affair. But like any other home project, there are several ways to make it easier, not to mention cheaper. By taking your time and making each decision with care, you can avoid the most common pitfalls and get much better results.

Most experts recommend working from the floor up; that is, starting with the flooring and working your way up to the walls, tables, ceiling, and other surfaces. That way, you have a solid foundation for the rest of the project. After all, it's usually the floor that sets the tone for the rest of the space, both structurally and aesthetically. Even if flooring isn't part of the project, it's still a good plan to follow.

It also helps to work one room at a time, instead of dealing with the whole house at once. Every room in the house has a different purpose and must be treated accordingly-there's seldom a universal design that works for the entire house. Before starting, take half an hour or so to check every room and see which ones need the most work. This helps you make more strategic decisions, particularly when it comes to large fixtures.

The kitchen is a good place to start your home remodeling project. In fact, if you're just after a quick change, you can probably just redo your kitchen and leave it at that. Since it's the busiest part of the home, it's where the change will be more evident and better appreciated. Set a realistic budget for your project, but don't limit yourself to it-if you need to change things up as you go along, go ahead and do so.

Finally, decide whether you can do it all yourself or need professional help. Each option has its pros and cons. Going the DIY route certainly saves you money, but if you're not careful, you might and up making even more costly mistakes. If you don't have that much experience, it may be worth it to invest in professional assistance and make sure everything's done right.
