Home Remodeling on the Cheap

Submitted by neillisa

Many homeowners balk at the mere thought of remodeling their homes. Some are put off by the heavy workload, others by the planning and strategy involved, but most are just worried about the costs. It's true that home remodeling doesn't come for free, but there are lots of ways to cut down on costs-and if you're resourceful enough, you can even spend half as much and still get the same results.

Like any other project, it all starts with planning. Take a look around your home and see exactly what needs to be changed. Chances are you don't have to do the entire home, or at least not all at once. Which areas need the most work, and which ones can hold up for another year or so? Make a list of your priorities so you can get the most important ones done first, and work your way down from there.

More often than not, it's the kitchen that will come up first on your list. As the most heavily used room of the house, it tends to show signs of wear while the rest of the place still looks new. Look for kitchen elements that could use an upgrade, such as the counter, the sink, the floor, or some of the large appliances. Remember, old appliances probably cost more to run than what they're worth, so it may make sense to get newer, more energy-efficient models.

For the rest of the house, try to look for quick fixes to minor problems. If all you really need is more space, why not just let go of some of your large furniture? Or if you're attached to your stuff, simply rearrange the room so that the space is better distributed. Create a clear path from one end of the room to another, or move the large items to the wall so that the middle is left bare and open.

Sometimes, all it really takes is a bit of accessorizing. Got a plain, boring wall? Put up a painting or a photo collage, or a stylish wall sculpture. Dull wood floors? Lay out an area rug that matches your color scheme. They don't have to be fancy or elaborate; as long as they fit in with your décor, they're sure to give your space a visual lift.

Remodeling your home doesn't have to cost a fortune. This article discusses a few ways to change up the look of your home while keeping a reasonable budget.
