How To Avoid HVAC Emergencies in 9 Easy StepsSubmitted by willard_7ph Sun, 21 Jun 2009
While it can be tempting to assume that our HVAC systems will never break down, that wouldn't be a smart idea. We need to take a look at our heating and cooling systems once a month, and give them a close inspection in the fall and the spring. Otherwise, you could end up having to replace or make significant repairs on your system every few years. That's not something most of us are really interested in doing. Take care of your system properly, however, and it'll take care of you. Here are nine ways to do that.
1. Once a month, chance your filter. If you have long haired pets or tile or hardwood floors, this might need to be done twice a month because of the increase in the amount of dust that will get caught in the filter. 2. Have your system inspected and tuned by a qualified professional to check the coolant and clean the vents. This will keep your system running a lot more efficiently. The longer you go between checks, the more problems will occur. 3. Listen to your system. If you've had it for a while, you'll know what it should and should not sound like. If things sound odd, check it over. 4. Watch your bills. You should carefully analyze all utility bills to make sure that you know what you're paying and why. Problems with your HVAC system could show up on your bill before you notice them in other ways. 5. Don't cut corners. Use quality filters and other parts to keep your HVAC system running for a long time. 6. Consider chemical treatments to prevent mold and bacteria from growing in your ductwork. This will improve your indoor air quality. 7. Budget for taking care of your system. It's worth it to make sure you have enough money to regularly maintain your HVAC system to make sure you don't get any unpleasant surprises. 8. Don't choose the cheapest company, choose the best and most reliable. It might cost a little more, but you'll have less expense down the line and be able to keep your system longer. 9. Comparison shop. Just because you shouldn't shop solely on price doesn't mean you shouldn't look for a good deal. Be sure to check multiple HVAC service companies to find the one that's best for your needs. These aren't the only things you need to do to keep your HVAC system in top condition, but they're some of the most important. If you're willing to pay attention and take care of your home, it'll last a lot longer and you'll be a lot more comfortable, too.
