How to Choose New Furniture

Submitted by wallunit

Maybe you have just moved into a new house, or maybe you've decided it's time to give the one you've been living in for years a makeover. One of the best ways to give yourself and your house a fresh start is through the purchase of new furniture. It can seem like an overwhelming task, but if you approach it correctly, you will eliminate some of the stressful aspects, and may even find that you are enjoying yourself!
The first thing you need to do is establish a budget. It's important to know exactly how much you are able to spend, because that will help determine how many pieces you can buy. Your budget can make the difference between buying just one piece and completely re-designing a room.
Next, you need to think about the room, or rooms you will be furnishing. Room size is the biggest factor here. However, it's not enough just to know the room's dimensions; you need to know exactly where the windows and doors are located, and if there are any problem areas where furniture may not work. There is actually software available that can help you with this task, or you can tackle it the old-fashioned way, by making sketches in a notebook. If there are any existing pieces you are keeping, be sure to include them in your plans.
At this point, your lifestyle will partly help you determine the type of furniture you will buy. If you have small children, you may want to avoid white or pale colors, and look for fabrics and materials that are easy to clean. If you have indoor pets, you will want furniture that will hold up under chewing or clawing.
Leather furniture is very tough and easy to clean, but if you live in a hot climate, you may find it uncomfortable sticky.
The next step is to consider how durable your furniture needs to be. An important consideration is the kind of use the furniture will get. Are you furnishing a kitchen that will get daily use, or a formal dining room that will only be used a few times a year? Higher-use areas will require sturdier, more functional furniture, while more formal areas can handle more fragile pieces.
Once you've considered all of these things, write down exactly what you're looking for. Include the type of piece, the desired dimensions, materials and colors. Don't rely on your memory; once you walk into the furniture store, all of the variety can be confusing.
Keep in mind that
furniture is a substantial investment, so you want to choose non-trendy pieces that you won't get tired of and that won't look dated right away. Don't be afraid to "test drive" it in the store. Sit on it, lay on it, tug on seams and buttons, and be sure to look underneath to make sure the construction is sturdy.
If you follow the above steps, you will find furniture that is right for your home and lifestyle and will give you use and enjoyment for many years to come.
