In recent years, the medical community has shown us that our environment may be causing cancer and a lot of the illness' we experience. So it has become very important to have Environmental Testing done.
When our homes are built, the land they sit on may well have been used at one time for a hazard waste area. However, until recent studies we never associated some of these things with danger. For example the chemicals left behind on property where produce was grown, may have a build up or residual effect, lasting for years. What may have been a junkyard years ago may be contaminated with fuel and oil in the soil. Byproducts like methane gas produced by high concentrations of cow manure may be in the soil of the property that was sold to build subdivisions.

The older buildings we live and work in may have residue from old lead paint or asbestos wallboard and insulation. These have been found to cause cancer from simply being exposed and inhaling over long periods of time. Although the government has taken steps to require these products be removed and properly disposed of, there are still a lot of older buildings that have not gone through the process. It usually isn't required until you sell the property, then it has to be brought up to standards before the final sale. They also check for radon gas build up in buildings, because they have found it to be a silent hazard as well.

The environment we live in has a lot to do with our respiratory health as well. Air pollution has become a problem in the bigger cities and the local governments are constantly trying to figure out how to reroute traffic, or call for stricter emissions control on automobiles. Some larger cities won't even allow tractor trailers in their downtown streets. They have to take the merchandise to hubs where smaller deliver trucks take over and deliver to businesses.
