How to Know When It Is Time to Replace an Air Conditioner

Yes, it is easy to become somewhat attached to an air conditioner. After all, when it is over one 100 degrees outside and you are cool and comfortable inside your home, you will grow quite pleased with your purchase of your trusty air conditioner. However, you need to avoid staying attached to an air conditioner that may have lived out its usefulness. That is, an air conditioner that no longer works properly simply is not a good air conditioner to keep. However, you want to avoid replacing an air conditioner after it has collapsed. That is, you do not want to discover your air conditioner breaking down unexpectedly on a very hot day. So, here are a few tips on how to recognize when your air conditioner is nearing the point where it has to be replaced.

The age of the air conditioner is usually an indication that its days may be numbered. After all, nothing lasts forever and this is definitely true when it comes to electronics. When you use an air conditioner after many years, the parts and internal components slowly start to wear down. As such, any air conditioner that is over 10 years old probably will need to be replaced.

Have you been getting a number of unwanted surprises on your electric bill? If so, it may be because your air conditioner is not working properly anymore. An older air conditioner that is nearing its ends of days will start to consume more energy in order to work. As such, incremental increases in energy expenditures will be indicative that the air conditioner may need to go.

The distribution of the cool air is also important to pay attention to. Is the cold air filtering throughout the home? Or are certain rooms warmer than others. Or, for that matter, are certain spots in the same room colder (or warmer) than others? If cool air is not being distributed properly, then there may be issues with the air conditioners ducts. Actually, it may be a clear sign that the air conditioner is nearing the point where it should be replaced.

Another sign of an air conditioner starting to malfunction is the presence of excess dust in the home. This is another common sign of malfunctioning ducts. It is also not exactly a healthy scenario as people in the home will be inhaling the dust when they breathe. Needless to say, the presence of excess dust should facilitate replacing an air conditioner as soon as possible.
