The first thing to keep in mind is that the utility bill you pay today will only be higher next year, unless you do something about it now. Fuels, like oil, natural gas, and even coal are getting more expensive. Green technology like wind and solar are still a very minor portion of our national electricity supply and most are still to cost prohibitive to be a viable option.

Just yesterday billionaire oil and Wind turbine mogul T. Boone Pickens stated his largest Texas wind farm is now on hold, maybe indefinitely. Apparently he has found it to be nearly impossible to get past all the bureaucratic red tape to get the transmission lines to the wind farm, even when his company was paying for it.

For you and I this means business as usual, but there may be a bit of relief out there and it may not cost you an arm and leg. I've read dozens of articles on how to reduce consumption, but many miss several real money saving opportunities for your home or business.

Get an inspection of your electrical breaker box, your over head wires, and your meter. Loose connections are not only a fire hazard; they can eat up massive amounts of electricity, or watts in the form of heat loss. As the loose breaker or connection has current flow through it, it will have very small arcs and those arcs are wasted energy that you are paying for.
Get a good electrician in Houston or Austin, depending on your city, and get them out to inspect your electrical equipment, and stop wasting money. Many people advocate the installation of more insulation in your attic. This can be a good thing, but think about an alternative to installing standard bat or blown in insulation.

Using newer foam insulation called icynene that can be sprayed on the inside of your roof, will do a much better job of insulating your attic and your home than bat or blown on the floor of your attic. Why, simple, icynene will lower the blistering Texas heat that builds up in your attic. The same attic your air conditioning blower and duct work are in! By lowering the temperature in the attic, the air conditioner will not have to work as hard or stay on as long and the air running through the ducts will be cooler.

Another good and relatively inexpensive tip is to replace your incandescent light bulbs with newer energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs. These types of light bulbs can save you quite a bit over a year's time.
Finally, if you can plant shade trees near your home or office. By shading your home from the hottest part of the afternoon sun, your air conditioning system won't have to work as hard and therefore your electric bill will lower
