Is Stress Contributing to Your Tinnitus?

Submitted by Pat Patrickson

Tinnitus, a condition causing the illusion of constant sound in your ears, can have many causes. One cause that should not be overlooked, however, is stress.

While it is true that the most cases of tinnitus are caused by a general loss of hearing, there are obviously exceptions. Stress remains one of the few causes of tinnitus that can actually be treated by a physician.

Stress causes havoc in the body, and has a multitude of side effects. These range from being over-sensitive and chronic fatigue, right down to high blood pressure, cardiac problems, ulcers, and of course, tinnitus.

Depending on your situation, you may, or may not, be in a position to do something about your stress levels. On the one hand it is easy to say that you have to change your lifestyle, and become more physically active. It is easy for someone else on the outside to give you advice. However, physically dealing with it in your unique set of circumstances, may not bee simple at all.

Fortunately, in most cases, it is possible to reduce stress levels, and the resulting side effects. There are many factors contributing to stress, and you should try and identify as many of them as possible. Once you know what exactly causes your stress, you can decide how you will attempt to reduce the contribution from each source.

You may, for instance, decide to handle situations differently at work. You may want to consider doing some reading on effective time management. You may simply want to do something physical every day, or even start playing computer games, in order to focus your mind on something completely different. In a worst case scenario, you may want to approach your physician for medication. Ideally, however, it should never come to that. For most people there are options for reducing stress without the need for medication.

How you handle your stressful situation is up to you. However, the fact remains that, if you are suffering from tinnitus and stress simultaneously, the stress may very well be the cause of the tinnitus. it may not be the only cause, but it may be the largest contributing factor.
