Long-Term Organizational HabitsSubmitted by Ellen Hamm Mon, 2 May 2011
Some people seem to be able to stay organized 100% of the time. Oh, how nice it would be to be able to keep things so nice and neat. Does it feel like you would simply be cleaning at every waking moment to accomplish this? It may seem that way, which makes it a frustrating endeavor that is quickly given up on by many who take it on.
Don't feel like an organized home is something that you can just never have the time to do. There are plenty of daily habits, little changes you could make, that will make that organized utopia of a home a reality. It may not happen right away, but you'll notice as you get used to one little thing at a time that all of those little habits start to make a big difference. Use this guide to help you come up with changes that you can make in your daily routines that will help you to be on your way to an organized home. Taking on one section of the house at a time is a great place to start. Don't, however, just find a problem area and clean it. Your current habits will ensure that even a clean hot spot is still a hotspot, nonetheless. You must take a little time with each area of clutter so that you can figure out which habits are affecting this area, and correct them. Take the kitchen counter, for example. Many people find their kitchens become the "catch-all" for junk that makes its way into the house. Schoolwork, reminders, cell phone chargers, receipts, lunchboxes, and more can pile up on the available surface until there is no surface left to speak of. Don't just clean it up, but find specific solutions for each thing that clutters this area. Then practice using the new areas for a week. Watch the clean counter top and see what ends up there. This will help you to eliminate each thing, one at a time, until you're in the habit of keeping that one spot clean. This technique takes a little longer, but little by little, your house will become permanently organized. You can also set other rules about getting rid of excess belongings and making new purchases that will help you to more easily keep things under control. When you want to buy something new, ask yourself if it is a "want" or a "need". Avoid purchasing "want" items until you have earned an award for conquering an area of your home. Then, have a rule for yourself that forces you to get rid of something old before you can bring in something new. Don't start using the new shampoo until the old one is completely gone. Don't put that new little black dress in the closet until the old one has come out. Use special clothes hangers to keep your closet organized. This will help you to avoid buying too many new things because you can easily see that you have twenty pairs of pants on your pants hangers. In order to buy new pants, you'll need to get rid of an old pair. This will help your closet to always look neat and organized. Figure out what systems work for you in different places of your home and you'll end up with a perfectly organized house for the rest of your life.
