Of all the Oaks in the world, American White Oak is the most highly prized, thanks largely to its delicate grain patterns. The combination of this elegance with immense strength has proved magnetic for kitchen designers and cabinet makers for centuries. One of the best uses for oak is as a kitchen worktop, which is always the hardest working element of any kitchen. An Oak worktop gives immediate warmth and beauty to kitchen which is hard to match. Unlike manmade materials, Oak worktops develop patina which enhances their beauty from year to year. It gets better however; if there is a disaster in the kitchen, or perhaps things just need a freshen up, one of the great joys of a solid oak worktop is simply that it can be sanded back and made to look like new. This makes oak a highly practical choice for a kitchen worktop where the life expectancy of the kitchen is high. Just as in all walks of life though, of course you get what you pay for.

To get the finest quality, choose a supplier who uses American White Oak from the Northern Appalachian mountains, particularly Vermont, Pennsylvania and New York State, always grown above 1000 feet. This is the crème de la crème of American White Oak, and the results are simply fabulous. It seems like quite a lot of research just for a kitchen worktop, but in fact, since that oak worktop will define the way your kitchen looks and performs, it’s undoubtedly worth the trouble. The potential extra expense is small compared to the overall cost of getting a kitchen right, and yet the difference a beautiful oak worktop will make versus a cheap one is simply enormous.
