Outside of the Closet: Wardrobes

Sometimes the closet space just isn't enough. Consider the different wardrobe closet options for organizing your clothes and making the space that you need. There are many types to choose from and different benefits to each. Use this guide to narrow down which type will suit you best.

Double door wooden wardrobes look very nice and provide you with a good amount of space to hang bulky items that crowd your closet. People usually use them for coats and suits. Besides that, they normally have drawers. Here you can store linens, blankets or seasonal items, freeing up space in your closet.

Cedar wardrobes are great for keeping your more valuable clothing safe from moths, moisture, mildew and odors. Cedar hangers are also helpful. Wool isn't the only fabric susceptible to moth larvae damage. Anything that you wear and don't immediately clean is vulnerable to moth larvae. Moths lay their eggs on clothing that has body oils in the fabric so that larvae can feed on it when they hatch. Cedar helps keep moths away from your coats, suits, sweaters and other items that you don't need to clean often. Cedar also absorbs odors, having a deodorizing effect. Some people like to keep their shoes in cedar wardrobes for this reason.

Canvas, nylon or plastic covered wardrobes are an inexpensive option for storing extra clothing. These portable wardrobes are great for out of season clothing and storing clothing in a spare room. The cover keeps dust from settling on your clothes when they go unused for some time. These wardrobes usually have casters on the bottom for easy maneuverability, making them a great option for versatile storage.

Another option is to build a wardrobe closet. These are becoming very popular. Some people simply build shelves, install cabinets, and hang a rod on an empty wall in their home. Clothing is easily organized in drawers and cabinets, keeping everything easily accessible when you need it. These types of wardrobe closets are a more like built in cabinetry than a closet. Building one yourself should not be very difficult, or you can hire a closet designer for a really professional look. Crown moulding and baseboards can add a nice finished appearance to wardrobe closet shelves and cabinets.

Some people find it very effective to simply install a wall mounted hanging rod. You can put a shelf above the rod for storing linens, purses or other closet items. Then, you can put another shelf at the bottom for shoes. You can make this wardrobe style closet as big or as small as you like.

To make your wardrobe closet look nice, choose the best clothes hangers that you can find. Wood hangers, like cedar hangers, always look great. Another option is to go for space saving hangers, like metal hangers, that give you extra space. Finishing touches like hangers, lighting, varnish and trim boards can make a DIY closet project look like a professional job.
