Save Time and Money by Organizing

Submitted by Ellen Hamm

Getting your life in order can save you time and money. Even if it's a few seconds here and there, it can add up to a few extra precious minutes of sleep, time with your family, and less stress. We all have busy lives nowadays. Just getting out the door in the morning involves cooking, cleaning, dressing, and preparing for the day. The more family members you add in and the less organized you are, the more painful and stressful your mornings can be. Getting your home life organized can save you from buying things that you already own and can't find. It can save you from having to speed to work. Being organized helps you to live a less stressful life where you feel in control of your surroundings. You can use these tips to get things running more smoothly in your household.

1) You save money when your closets are organized. Take note of what you have so that you realize when you need to buy something and when you don't. Separate work, casual, and work-out clothes so that you can easily see what you have. Better yet, coordinate outfits on combination hangers so that you know which shirts go with which bottoms. You won't think that you need to buy a shirt to match the skirt that you want to wear if you already have one hanging with it. Sometimes we simply forget what we own if it's crammed in the back of the closet where we never see it.

2) Coordinating outfits in advance will save you precious minutes every morning when you're getting ready for work and getting the family ready as well. As outfits are worn, they go right back on the clothes hangers that they came off of, so it is easy to stay organized once you get that way. You can even section off the closet with dividers, size markers, or homemade cardboard rings that help you and your family keep things together. You might hang a pair of pants and the four shirts that go best with them in one section, and so on. Kids can more easily decide what to wear and you can get ready in a jiffy.

3) Use your coat closet as the organizational center for your family. Shelves are very useful here. If possible, designate one shelf per family member. Use baskets, bins, calendars, cork boards, whatever you need to keep things running smoothly in the morning. Hang everyone's coats on cedar hangers and insist on them going back in the second they come in the door. The cedar will absorb any moisture on the coats and keep them fresh for the next day. Create a check list for kids that constantly forget their jacket, lunch, or homework. Leave reminders for yourself about meetings, field trips, projects and more. Taking a quick glance and having everything that you and your family needs at hand is incredibly helpful on busy mornings.
