Saving Money Starts at Home

Submitted by jill

Whether you are buying a new air conditioner or dish washer, thinking about ways to save money, it all starts at home. There are ways that you can save money in every room of your home.

In the Garage, try ways to save money by increasing your gas mileage in your vehicle. Keeping your car's maintenance up to date is one way to keep your gas mileage down. Have the oil changed according to the schedule of your owner's manual. Keep your tires properly inflated and having good alignment can increase your gas mileage by 3%.

Driving more efficiently can save money. Drive the posted speed limits. Gas mileage begins to decrease at 60 miles per hour and above. Remove unnecessary items from your trunk; an additional 100 pounds can decrease your gas mileage by 2%.

Don't pack items on the top of your car unless you have to. The wind resistance of a loaded roof can reduce your fuel economy by 5%.

If you live near work, try alternative transportation two times a week.

It doesn't matter where you live; heating or cooling your home eats up about 56% of your utility bill. Home owners can save money by checking the weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors. Install ceiling fans, they can cool rooms in the summer and help circulate heat in the winter.

When purchasing new appliances for your kitchen, cheapest is not always the best route. Make sure the appliance you are purchasing meets all government energy conservation standards. Many appliances exceed these standards and can save even more money. The most important thing to remember is to research before you buy.

Check plumbing for leaks. A leaky faucet or toilet can cost home owners hundreds of dollars each month. If you have a septic system, a leaky faucet can fill your system up quickly and cause smelly overflow as well as having to pay a plumber to pump out your system.

Any time an appliance or plumbing needs repairs, be sure to use only licensed professionals. Using someone who is not licensed can cause more damage and void any warranties you may have on that particular item.

Your home will be more comfortable and cost less to cool and heat if you have the right insulation. Adding insulation is a very good way of saving money. Many older homes were built with less insulation, which can mean higher energy bills.

Installing new windows can help shave some pennies from that energy bill too. Consider installing high-efficiency alternatives. Look for windows made of low emissive; or "low-E" glass.

Home owners can also plant trees around their home. They provide natural shade and if planted in well placed areas, can add value to your home and property.

You can save money each month by following just a few simple habits. Turning off lights, washing clothes in cold water and running your dishwasher only when it is full, all these add up over time.
