Smart Home Design

Submitted by neillisa

With the economy tanking, home design and décor are probably the last thing on most people\'s minds. But who said prettying up your home had to be expensive? It doesn\'t-in fact, it doesn\'t even have to cost a dime. Like they say, good design is a matter of taste more than a matter of budget. No matter what your budget is, you can make changes that will make your home a lot more welcoming and even increase its market value.

It all starts with recognizing cheaper options that give you the same value for less. In flooring, for example, you don\'t always have to settle for hardwood or granite. Although they\'re worth the money, there are less expensive floors that work just as well. Resilient materials like vinyl and linoleum can last several decades and require very little maintenance. They also come in various designs, so you won\'t be giving up style either.

Room fabrics are also a great way to update your home décor. Curtains, rugs, slipcovers and wall fabrics don\'t cost a whole lot-you may even have a few good pieces lying around. Since they don\'t involve complex installation, you can mix and match them until you find a combination that works both functionally and aesthetically. Or if you like a bit of change, you can use a different fabric from time to time and keep the look fresh.

Sometimes, a change in lighting is all the difference you need. Try changing your overhead daylight lamp into something warmer, or putting in a stylish fixture. During the day, keep windows open and make good use of natural light. Floor lamps are very trendy nowadays, especially with the sleek modern designs coming out. If you have a small space, consider wall sconces-they add a nice intimate look while freeing up the floor.

Finally, don\'t underestimate the power of a good accessory. You may have designed your home by the book, but it\'s really the small bits you throw in that give it character. Put up a painting you like or a photograph you took. Display souvenirs from recent trips, personal projects, family antiques-whatever you have that has personal appeal. Even if they don\'t quite fit in, they give your home a unique touch and make it truly your own.

You don\'t have to spend a fortune to glam up your home. This article lists some inexpensive ways to update your home\'s look. Find more information about home lighting.
