Smart Meters Ideal for Renewable Energy Users

Submitted by oliviadirect

Smart meters will revolutionise the way that gas and electricity is monitored. The invention of a digital gauge to replace your normal gas and electricity meters gives accurate and detailed information about your energy consumption. For customers who own their own renewable energy generators, smart meters can provide an invaluable tool to assess exactly how much renewable energy is being supplied and how much is required at any given time in a household.

Renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions has become a key commitment for governments across the globe. Climate change and global warming are real and credible threats which are only recently being taken seriously on a global agenda. In a bid to reverse some of the effects of global warming, the British government has committed to a long-term goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 60 per cent by 2050.

As part of the plan to move away from exhaustible fossil fuels, the Government offers grants to help homeowners offset the costs of installing renewable energy systems into their home. There are a number of renewable energy systems that can be implemented in most homes. Among the most popular are photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and micro-hydro energy systems.

The thing about renewable energy systems is that the amount of energy they produce fluctuates along with the time that they produce energy. Photovoltaic panels for example convert energy from the sun into electricity. On extremely sunny days, the panels will sometimes produce an excess of energy surplus to the requirements of one household. On the other hand, short wintery days with less sunlight will produce less electricity.

Whilst excess energy can be stored in batteries, the act of storing energy is an inefficient process, which ultimately wastes energy. A better alternative is to sell excess energy back to the utility company that provides you with your electricity. The innovative smart meters make monitoring the amount of energy you use at any given moment easy to measure. With the aid of smart meters, customers with their own renewable energy supply can easily gauge how much electricity they are producing and how much excess energy they can afford to sell back to the utility company.

Smart meters are the future of reliable energy monitoring, and in the case of renewable energy generation, will help customers accurately assess their surplus energy production or deficiencies in supply.
