You should use cold water if it is a must that you rinse the dishes first. In addition you should wash only full loads since the dishwasher uses the same amount of water whether it is half load or full load.

You should learn to put the dishes in the dishwasher and running them with water throughout the day because it uses less water and energy than washing the dishes by hand. You will use a lot of water if you wash the dishes by hand than if you could have use the dishwasher and thus you will be using a lot of energy for nothing. You can measure how much water can be used if you wash your dishes by hand thereby requiring more energy to boil the water you are using to wash them.
