Wooden Floors - An Historical Inspiration - A Modern Look

Submitted by kristianphllps

There's nothing more inspiring than wandering around a Stately Home looking at all the beautiful things that are on show and wondering how you could transform your own home into a palace.

Well there is one way that you can transform you home and get it on the road to royalty (or at least gentry) install a wooden floor.

A wooden floor? You might think that that smacks more of peasant that princess but in fact once installed and polished and maybe with an exotic rug in place your home will be instantly transformed into a palace.

What's more wooden floors are now relatively easy to install. You can fit some yourself but if you are not the DIY kind you can find someone to do it for you. There is no need to go down the rout of sanding your floorboards. After all that fills the house with dust and the gaps between the boards take ages to fill and the result is never quite as good as you think it ought to be. Nowadays there are wooden floors that are engineered to fit your room and are brilliantly varnished or oiled to give a room a clean functional feel but also bring a sense of warmth and luxury to a property.

Wooden floors can be installed by yourself or you can get a wooden floor that is bespoke made for your house. It really depends on how much money you want to spend. A simple laminate floor which you fit yourself will be a relatively cheap purchase- it will not last forever and is not the best choice for a room that experiences a heavy footfall but it is practical where the traffic is light and you have a limited budget. If you are after the ultimate, bespoke, princess in a castle hand made, hand installed specially fitted oak wooden floor you may find it costs a little more.

Wooden floors are great because they are easy to maintain. You can sweep the dust away with a broom. They don't hide the dust like a carpet does and are therefore ideal for a princess with allergies, but they are also great for people with pets. The royal Corgi hair can be swept up easily and if there is a spillage on the floor it to is easily wiped away. No need to call in the royal carpet cleaner…

Having a wooden floor also doesn't mean you have to forgo the luxury of material beneath your feet. You can accessorize your room with rugs and throws which can be easily washed to get rid of dust and dirt (you can also display that bear skin rug that you have in the attic from you friend the Duke should you wish) So in fact having a wooden floor actually allows you to add more luxury to your palace but keep it cleaner that you would if it was furnished with carpets alone.
