Central air conditioning systems (or ducted systems as they are also know) often contain a series of different zones. So what is a zone in regards to air conditioning? The following article describes what zones are, what they do and why they are so important to include in your air conditioning system.

1) What Does A Zone Do - Zones let you turn different sections of your air conditioning system either on or off. A zone will open or close a motor which either allows air through or restricts the passage of air. This allows you to choose which rooms in your home you want to receive air conditioning. Since most central air conditioner can only run about half a home at any one time, zones are vital in being able to evenly distribute the airflow.

2) Choosing What To Run - The main advantage of zoning is that it gives you the flexibility to only run the rooms that you need to run. This means you can turn off the rooms that are not required, giving you flexibility.

3) Reduce Power Usage - By only running the zones you need, you can actually save a lot of money. Running rooms that have no one in is a waste of money. Zoning however lets you cool/heat only the rooms you are in which will save power.

4) Save Money When Running - Because you can run less zones and save on power consumption, ultimately you will also save money on running costs. This means you will have more money for your back pocket.

With these tips and pointers in mind, it is easy to see why zoning your air conditioning system is so important. So be sure to tell your hvac contractor to include lots of zones in your next air conditioning quote.
