DVR cards were invented to make it possible to turn a computer into a security surveillance center. This is made possible by installing a DVR card into an open slot on a computer. This is accomplished by utilizing an advanced video compression technology that has been developed along with the other advances in video technology over the past few years.

The limiting factors of today's DVR cards are the number of security cameras for which the video can be captured from. The one with the most capacity can handle 16 different cameras. The speed at which the videos can be recorded varies among the different DVR cards. There are those that record at 20 FPS. For better quality there are DVR cards that can record at a speed of 480 fps. With the increased speed comes better quality of video, but also a need for increased storage space.

If a DVR card records the video from 16 cameras at a speed of 20 fps, it will take up 6 GB of space in 24 hours. If the speed is at 60 fps, it will take up 19 GB of space in 24 hours and if at a speed of 480 fps the space used on a hard drive will be 94 GB. Knowing this will help the owner in their decision on how fast the video speed can be at with the allowable space that is available on the hard drive.

The best thing about DVR is that the recordings can be downloaded onto flash drives to free up space on the computer's hard drive. This also makes it convenient to review from any possible location other than the security center.

There is a wide choice of options when choosing which of the DVR cards to use for your application.
