Space heaters have a bad reputation. They are notorious for starting house fires, blowing fuses, shorting out and even singing pets. But employing a few simple hints can greatly increase the personal safety of your family while using this appliance.
The two major characteristics of electrical space heaters - the two things for which they are useful and convenient - are also the two major sources of danger, heat and electricity. It is important that you know the outlet in which you plan to plug your heater is properly and securely wired. If your home or office is older have the wiring thoroughly tested and inspected by a professional. If it needs to be upgraded, do so. Make sure that the fuse box and circuit breakers are examined as well.
Since the point of a heater is to heat caution must be taken as to what is being heated. In other words, make sure that the heater is kept an adequate distance from potential combustibles. Make sure that it is placed well away from curtains, clothing, flammable liquids, paper, etc. Also, because it is electrical, keep it well away from water.
Inspect the paperwork and any tags on the product to make sure that it is certified and approved for operation in your area. Legal safety regulations vary from country to country, state to state, and province to province. Make sure that you are familiar with the laws that affect you and that the heater is up to those standards.
There are many different styles of electrical heaters on the market. If you purchase one that provides heat from coils make sure that they are adequately guarded and the appliance is of sound construction. If air is drawn across the coils with a fan then papers, hair, and dust - all of which are flammable - could get sucked in as well causing a fire. Make sure that the product is designed properly to prevent such hazardous situations.
When purchasing a new heater make sure that you read and understand the instructions for safe handling. The manufacturer understands and has tested the product and knows what precautions should be taken for safe operation.
Never leave an electrical space heater unattended. A heater that has operated with no problem for months and even years can break and cause serious damage. Coil style heaters can through sparks. All plug in heaters can develop issues with the plug.
Used properly electrical space heaters can be a great appliance. They can provide heat and comfort during the cold months and drive the chill out of basements. Taking just a few simple precautions will prevent them from becoming serious hazards.
