How to Carry Defense Pepper Spray

Submitted by Fabiola Castillo

Concern for your own safety or the safety of your family should be a priority. With crime rates escalating to new highs, and with more low-income families moving into your neighborhood that once catered to the middle or upper class, one must be on guard in defense of himself or family members.

If you choose pepper spray to be your primary weapon for self defense, it is recommended that you carry the largest size that is practical and legal for you. For 2 oz. pepper sprays, these measure about 4” in length and 1” in diameter. They are small enough to clip onto a purse or belt. They are not too bulky enough for you to carry.

If you find that the 2 oz. size is too inconvenient or impractical, then opt for the keychain spray. The biggest advantage of having pepper spray on your keychain is that you will not forget bringing your keys with you. Consider putting the spray on your house keychain or your car keychain preferably your house keychain because you will always need your house keys to enter or leave your home. You will not necessarily get into your car if you leave your house.

Unless you have no other options, do not carry defense pepper spray in your pocket. Very often the spray can not be drawn for action quickly enough to do any damage to your attacker. Keep in mind that most physical assaults happen very rapidly. This often leaves the victim little time to react to the confrontation. There is a way to circumvent this possibility, but only if your pepper spray is readily available. Another reason you should not carry pepper spray in your pocket is the possibility of forgetting to bring it with you the next time you leave your home.
