During a time when people are being forced to keep a close watch on their finances and employment situations, they shouldn't have to worry about the security of their own home too. With the recession still in full force, some sociologists are convinced that the high rate of unemployment is leading to an increase in theft. Research suggests that certain types of crimes have been on the rise since late 2008 and early 2009. USA Today reported that, "burglary and robbery are on the rise, increasing 39% and 32% respectively so far in 2009.

With that in mind, there are several simple steps homeowners can take to ensure the safety of their belongings and property:

Install Motion Sensor Flood Lights
These lights are inexpensive and will allow you see anyone near your property in the dark. Also, if a burglar is close enough to your home, the light will be a signal to you that someone is on your premises. These lights should be placed near the front and back doors, and any other side doors or windows that are exposed to easy entry.

Fence in Your Yard
If you don't have a fence, consider placing one around the perimeter of your property or at the very least, your back yard. Fences are a good signal to robbers that you've taken the time and money to protect your space. Additionally, make sure any openings to your fence are locked securely.

Neighbors
Never underestimate the power of a watchful eye. Ask neighbors to keep a look out for any suspicious behavior around your home, as many criminals "case the joint" before they actually perform a robbery. Also, if you reside in an area that has a neighborhood watch, take place in it. Making sure you entire neighborhood is protected ensures a higher level of safety for your own home.

Window and Door Locks
Double check that all your doors have at least one working lock. Make sure all windows, upstairs and downstairs, are also locked before you leave the house each day. Unlocked windows can make your home an easy target, as a robber could easily slip in and out undetected, taking whatever they please.

Security Cameras
Install a home surveillance system or wireless security cameras around your home. These cameras can be purchased for around $100-$300 and the systems are priced around $500 - $1,000. Both security measures are highly effective ways to deter burglaries. Not only do security cameras act as a theft deterrent, they also allow you to see what's going on around your home when you can't be there. Additionally, if a break in ever does occur, you will have the footage for insurance and legal purposes.

While this economy has a good majority of the population focused on their finances and employment situations, it's good to not forget that there are other ways you should be protecting yourself. Follow these simple and easy steps to protect your home during this recession.
