There are a lot of mattresses in the market these days that promise you comfort and health benefits. However, are these mattresses completely safe and void of any type of risks? Let us find out about the safety of such mattresses.

Fire is most dangerous risk for your mattress that you need to keep in mind when you are off to sleep each night. According to a recent survey, approximately 360 people die each year from mattress fires.

Mattress manufacturers must now meet a federal fire resistant standard that helps save lives. The new mattresses will meet a strict performance regulation that will make them more resistant to fires started by open flames from matches, lighters, candles, etc. It only takes a few minutes for flames to engulf a mattress, and then destroy a room. Hence, mattresses manufactured under this regulation will burn much more slowly, adding to the time victims can escape injuries or death.

Apart from these regulations that the mattress manufacturers adhere to, there are few things that you need to keep in mind too.

Don't smoke in bed as this habit is a major source of accidental fire deaths in homes.

Use decorative candles rather cautiously.

Always blow off the candles when you fall asleep.

Children should not be allowed to play with candles, matches or lighters.

Make sure you install a functioning fire alarm in every bedroom.

Test smoke alarm batteries every month and change them at least once a year

In addition to taking such safety precautions, you should also have an insurance that will cover damages and/or injuries caused by smoke or fire. Following safety guidelines will surely reduce your risk factor; however they will not eliminate the possibility of the unexpected. Insurance is for the unexpected. Damages or injuries from fire or smoke can set back your bank account if you are not prepared. Hence, you should thoroughly review your insurance policies to be sure you are covered for these perils.

Also, if you find that your mattresses are torn, worn out and have completed their lifetime. It is wise to change them as they would be more susceptible to further damage and open flames. Such mattresses not only prove to be a health risk but they also destroy your sleep.

Hence, whenever you are out mattress shopping, make sure that they follow the regulations set and they are also made up of constituents that are less hazardous. This will not only help you get a sound sleep but will also assure that your sleep is healthy and less risky.
