When decorating a room, it is best to follow a consistent style. The three most common styles are contemporary, modern, and traditional. To choose a style you want to decorate with, you must first understand what defines each one. It will help you in achieving the statement you want your room of choice to make. Also, when you are finding accessories for the room, such as home lamps, it will make shopping easier because you will be able to identify which pieces fit the decorating style you are trying to achieve. The different styles are defined by color, space, and shape and include not only the room itself but what is in the room.

If you want a look that is comfortable, clean, sleek, and spacious, go with contemporary style. Geometric shapes and bold lines are unique to this style. Accessories in the room like home lamps should stand out and make a statement. Look for lamps with geometric shapes that come in neutral colors, black, or white and are made from industrial materials. If the walls in the room are white, pick out a black lamp to offset the color and choose solid colors. If you choose to purchase a table lamp, don't clutter the table with other accessories because having a lot of space is essential in achieving a contemporary style room. When choosing furniture and accessories, remember the rule that less is more.

Modern and contemporary styles are very similar. The main difference between the two styles is that modern style is always changing. Contemporary is a timeless look that will always be defined by lines, geometry, space, and color. Modern style includes a lot of these elements, but to be modern the room has to have the most popular designs of its time. If you want a modern style in your home, you may have to update the look anytime a new trend comes into popularity. Keeping up with the cutting edge of furniture and accessories is unique to a modern style room.

Unlike modern and contemporary, traditional style is predictable and classic. When you walk into a room with traditional style you should feel a sense of calmness, familiarity, and warmth. A unique element to this style is the pairing of furniture and accessories. When you are picking out lamps for the home, buy them in pairs. Look for lamps that come with lamp shades, and most are silk and white. The colors in a traditional style room are plain, and lines are smooth with soft rounding edges or arches. Furniture should be arranged symmetrically and look timeless. Most, if not all, the furniture is made from wood. This is a classic look that will never go out of style.
