How to Reduce Water Heating CostsSubmitted by workmedia Wed, 15 Dec 2010
Paying utilities is part of living life in modern society, and there are plenty of them to consider. There are a number of appliances that use different types of utilities, but a water heater is unique in that it uses not only water, but gas as well. This means that whenever you want to use hot water, you are running up your gas and electric bill as well as your water bill at the same time. Therefore, it is important to many people to reduce their water heating costs, and here we'll go over a few simple tips in order to help you lower your bills.
The easiest way to reduce your water heating costs is to lower the heat setting on the water heater. This will reduce the amount of time that the burner is active, which in turn will reduce your gas and electric bill. A good level to keep your water heater at is to the point where if you turn on just the hot water in the tap, it gets hot enough to where it is uncomfortable to keep your hand under it (but not scalding). This will also prevent young children from scalding themselves in the sink or bath. Speaking of baths, they are another very easy way to reduce water heating costs. If you take baths or give them to young children, reducing the amount of water used can be a tremendous help. Teaching young kids to shower early on will help you save money on water heating. Taking shorter showers can also dramatically reduce water heating costs. Keep in mind that other appliances, such as the dishwasher and the washing machine, also channel heated water. Reducing the amount of water that these appliances use, or maximizing their efficiency by only using them when they are full, can help reduce the cost of using them. Lastly, a simple tip to help reduce water heater costs would be to stop to think before you use hot water. Ask yourself: "Do I need to use hot water for this?" When it comes to something like doing dishes, hot water is best, but washing one's hands or face does not necessarily require hot water. The easiest way to reduce your water heating bill is to simply use less hot water. You'd be surprised at how many ways people use hot water without it being necessary, and cutting down on this can help.
