As you look at your classic furniture, you are most certain that they can last for another decade or so. But sadly, their colors and designs are no longer apt for the modern era and it makes you wonder: Is it still possible to maintain the classic style of my furniture and keep them timely?

You can actually maintain the style of your classic furniture and at the same time make it look more modern. Here are some ways for you to start with.

Start with small details.

Do not throw away your “outdated” furniture. Changing or adding small details is a good start. For example, you can add bright colored throw pillows that match the pastel color of your bed or couch. Or, for your earth tone shelves, you may place eye-catching decorative pieces like golden bells and figurines.

Do not always think big.

Classic pieces of furniture do look elegant, but it does not necessarily mean that they should also be imposing and expensive. You may go to modern furniture shops and buy something that has a classic design like that of the Victorian bed that your great grandparents had, but with a much smaller size. The designers who originally made classic furniture had often worked with rooms that are much larger than the ones that you can find in today’s homes. So if you decide to purchase authentic and huge classic item, make sure that you will not find it too difficult to maneuver it in your room or make it feel overcrowded. Besides, ersatz antique furniture can still look very real for a much lesser and affordable price.

Look for a particular element.

When you are shopping for classic furniture, do not focus on the original style that you really like. Instead, think about what it is in the style that satisfies you. For example, is it the size or the design of your chosen classic loveseat? Probably, you are pleased with the intricate carving on the furniture or the material from which it is made of. Whatever it may be that you particularly like, you can actually find that element incorporated into a much contemporary design.

Know how to compromise.

There may be times that you could not find exactly the specific style and color that you have in mind. If you find a nice antique furniture piece that is a little shade off, you can still buy this classic item and add it to your home. You can always sand the furniture and have it refinished to bring out its classic but timely appearance. Indeed, you can still do something to give your old dull-looking furniture a classic look that can complement the designs of the 21st century.
