Sofas Buying Guide

Submitted by John Lewis

The first thing to consider when buying a sofa is to be aware of where it is going to go. Unless you know the size of the room you intend to buy a sofa for, you might end up buying an item that is too big or to small.

It is therefore critical that you measure the area in your house or office where you want to place the sofa, and compare it with the following measurements:

- Small Sofa- up to 175cm
- Medium Sofa - 175 - 190 cm
- Large Sofa - 190- 210cm
- Extra large Sofa - 210cm+

Once you decide on the size of the sofa you want to buy, the next step is to look at material. You should choose the material depending on the usage of the sofa. There are two main options available:

- Leather sofas: Leather has high durability and can last for several years. They also never go out of fashion, and will give your living room an elegant and stylish look.

- Fabric sofas: There are a lot of choices when it comes to fabric sofas. These types of sofas are ideal for busy or young family.

When looking to buy a sofa, you should also remember that the arms of a sofa can affect the overall look of the furniture. A sofa with narrow arms can make the entire sofa look small and compact, whereas the big overstuffed arms will help to accentuate the size of the sofa.

A smart way to utilise the space in any room is to use corner sofas. By placing furniture items in the middle and sideways of a room, the corners are wasted. However, by placing a corner sofa, you can utilise the space without compromising on the aesthetics.

If you want a multi purpose sofa, why not consider buying a sofa bed. The main advantage of a sofa bed is its versatility. Sofa beds are great for accommodating overnight guests whilst keeping the room more spacious and open during the day. What's more, if you need an extra bed but do not want it to occupy the space all the time, a sofa bed serves as the best option.
