What is Interior Design?

Interior design, which on face value seems very similar to interior decorating, focuses on the architecture, product design, environmental psychology as well some of the same aspects of interior decorating. One who practices this profession is known as an interior designer.
An interior designer takes into consideration the graphic communication, construction elements, and the conceptual and design direction on a piece they on working on. Most of the world does not differentiate between interior designer and interior decorator. This distinction is found in only the United States and Canada.
Interior designers can specialize in many different areas of interest. They could do residential or commercial design, hospitality, health care, or industrial design.
Interior designers can also get certified in specific areas of the field. For example, for designers who are interested in and educated in building environmentally sustainable and friendly ways, then they can take an examination given by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) council.
Getting a bachelor's degree in interior design is more common than getting a master's degree in the subject. Master's degrees are available in this subject but it is rare for designers to pursue this advanced degree. More often designs pursue advanced degrees in specialties of interior design or related subjects, like fine art, education or industrial design.
In other countries around the world interior designers do not have all the same requirements as those in the United States. Many colleges throughout Canada do not require students to get a degree to be a professional interior designer.
A source for interior designers in the United States is the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), which is a community that was created by and for interior designers. It is a place for interior designers to learn and share their knowledge. It also has a directory of designers, industry partners, students training to work in the field, and consumers interested in field.
ASID also has a foundation that raises money and holds projects to further the learning and advancements in the interior design field. The foundation also continues doing research initiatives so that interior designers can continue growing.
A source for international interior designers is the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). This association is also a great resource for interior designers and the field of interior design. The association is a place for those interested in interior designing jobs. They have a career center and knowledge center to do this.
The association also have a foundation, like ASID. This foundation does much the same thing as ASID's does.
