As parents, we want to give our children everything they want. They see something on the shelf that they just have to have, and before you know it, we are pulling out the charge card or writing a check. It's difficult on us as well as the them. But we also need to consider what this is teaching them. Teaching responsibility by thinking of ways for kids to make money and buy the things that they want accomplishes many things. Learning financial issues is something they all need to know and how to use it is even more important.

There are many avenues to consider. Letting them earn it by setting up a chore list is what most of us think of doing. This not only allows them to earn funds, but it teaches them the responsibility of being in a family that pulls together to get things done around the house.

If they want to earn extra because there is something special that they want to buy, perhaps having a extra list posted in the house where they could pick an extra job that pays a certain amount will help them accomplish that. This shows them that should there be something they want to get right away, they have the opportunity to work for it.

There are available jobs in the neighborhood that older children could work if the parents are comfortable with it such as yard work, mowing the grass, washing cars or walking dogs. The neighbors usually have things that they would rather pay others to do than do it themselves.

Allowing them the opportunity to know what they want and see that there is a way for them to work for it, save for it or plan for it will help them understand that this is how life is and we all have to work to get what we want.

Finding ways for kids to make money will build their self confidence, self esteem and allows them to be proud of their accomplishments. This will roll over to other parts of their lives as they grow and realize the many responsibilities that come with growing up.
