Learn About DIY Water Damage Restoration And Waterproofing Basement WallsSubmitted by englishsunset Thu, 3 Feb 2011
Many homes are built with a full basement or cellar, and very often there is water damage in these areas. One skill homeowners should learn is waterproofing basement walls. This is definitely a DIY restoration that most people can handle.
Of course, if your time and handyman skills are limited, or the problem is complicated, it is in your best interest to hire a contractor specializing in water damage prevention and restoration. There are many excellent companies around the country whose main occupation is exactly water damage related. One thing you do not want to do is ignore the problem. If you detect that musty basement smell or see black mold growing, you know you need to do something, the sooner the better. It is not advisable to merely buy some basement waterproofing paint and cover the walls. This will not work if the leak is still present. It might slow it down for a week or two, but soon, the paint will peel off and you will be back where you started, only a little poorer and with a mess on your hands. Before you try and paint the walls, you need to locate the source of the leak and stop it. If it is quite small, you can patch it with one of the specialized basement waterproofing products on the market, or make your own out of a mixture of cement, sand and water. It is usually not too difficult to repair a foundation crack, as long as it is small. Once the crack is sizable, you really need to get professional help, not therapy either! DIY water restoration is something that takes effort and education. You can learn a lot by reading books from a building supply store, the library, or, of course, on the internet. It is surprising how much money you can save by doing it yourself, and the feeling of accomplishment is quite rewarding. It is important from a health standpoint to take care of any moisture in your basement. I personally know a family in New Hampshire who actually had to move from their rented house because of the mold and mildew present. The entire family suffered from chronic headaches, stuffy and runny noses, coughing, and fatigue. Because they rented, there was not a lot they could do about the problem. The absentee owner was negligent to the point of the town requiring the house be demolished. Years of neglect had taken such a toll on the structure of the house that there was literally no way to save it. This was a house that could have sold for $400,000, if it was clean and safe. Sometimes you can find some real estate bargains with houses that have suffered water damage. This can be a great investment opportunity, or a way to get in over your head very quickly. In the above mentioned example, you might think that buying such a place at a discount would be a bargain, but, in the end, it would have been a nightmare. If you are looking for a DIY restoration fixer-upper, make sure you are prepared for what you are getting into.
