Learn How To Get Rid Of Mildew And About DIY RestorationSubmitted by englishsunset Sun, 6 Feb 2011
Learning how to get rid of mildew falls under the category of DIY restoration, because it is certainly something the homeowner can take care of. Besides, even if you had a professional come and take care of the water damage or humidity problem, it would come back if you were not interested in prevention.
Mildew and black mold require that a few living conditions be met before the agree to move in with you. First, you must provide a nice, moist environment for them to set up a home. Next, you need to make sure they have plenty of constant warmth so they can raise billions of little mold spores to contaminate your air with. Finally, do not keep your house clean, really clean. They just need something to live on, after all! Seriously, getting rid of mildew can be a maddening prospect until you learn what it is it needs in order to thrive. Remove the living conditions and the problem will go away, along with that nasty musty basement smell. There are many excellent products on the market that can help you get rid of mold and mildew. One of the best is also the cheapest: vinegar. If you mix vinegar and water, and use it as a spray or in a bucket, you can clean your entire house, from top to bottom and it will be squeaky clean and smell great. You can also invest a lot more in commercial products, if that makes you feel more official, but, in most cases, a little vinegar, water, and a whole lot of elbow grease will provide all the cleaning you could wish for. One place that is commonly a problem is the bathroom. A lot of older homes do not have a vent fan, which is only asking for a problem. If you have a few family members taking hot showers on a regular basis and no ventilation, you almost certainly will develop a mold and mildew problem. That is probably not the case in the arid Southwest though. Even with a ceiling fan, some people seem to always forget to run the fan when showering. I know a teenager who neglected this to the point where the ceiling paint all peeled off, yet he continued his ridiculous habit. I know because I was the guy who scraped and painted the ceiling for his mother, my friend. Installing a vent fan is sometimes a bit complicated, and might cost more than you wish, but it is worth it. If you do nothing, the problem will only get worse and the water damage will increase until you are forced to act. Mildew and mold can cause a lot health problems for the family and should be taken seriously. Some common symptoms are runny noses, sneezing, coughing, headaches, aching joints and even rashes. It causes flu-like and asthma-like symptoms that can really be draining on your energy and health.
