Low Cost Food Options for Your Family ReunionSubmitted by x508401 Mon, 2 Feb 2009
Food is one of the most important aspects of a memorable family reunion. Unfortunately with the high cost of many of todays most popular foods the event quickly becomes expensive for even the smallest of family get togethers. Thankfully there are many options available to reduce the overall price burden and significantly take the financial burden off of the person organizing the family reunion.
Having enough food for everybody is important and there are several questions you should ask when planning for the event. How many relatives and spouses are going to attend? How many kids? Where are you going to get the food? And most importantly, Who is going to pay for it all? In most cases the person that organizes the reunion will be figuring out most of the logistics such as time, place and where the food will be coming from. Most of these details can be easily worked out in advance with other family members and it should be made clear early on that just because you are organizing the family reunion you will not be responsible for all of the food. Ideally everyone should be responsible for his or her own food and drink to cut down on the overall cost of throwing the get together. However this cannot always be the case Once you have figured out roughly how many people are going to attend the family reunion you will need to talk to the head of each household and get an idea of what they might be able to contribute as far as homemade food or even store bought party platters of sliced meat, vegetables and dip. Sometimes certain members of the family have 'signature' dishes that they enjoy preparing and they should be encouraged to contribute. As the organizer you should work towards everyone bringing a variety of dishes and insure that not everyone simply brings bags of potato chips and some bottles of soda. While a Family Style Restaurant or caterers can take care of all the food preparation for you this can easily get very expensive, by having everyone prepare a dish or contribute in some way it not only saves money but creates a sense of family unity. A quick and easy way of throwing a family reunion is a good old fashioned barbecue. It keeps the cost low and everyone usually has lots of fun too. Most people have access to a barbecue grill and cooking and food preparation can be done while enjoying the family conversations. Hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs and chicken are a great choice for the family barbecue. And since almost every family has at least one vegetarian these days there are many options available to them besides potato salad. Vegetarian shish kabobs, corn on the cob or even meatless hamburger patties and hot dogs are all easily available and readily cooked on the grill. Cost should not be a prohibiting factor when considering organizing your next family reunion. Take charge and don't be afraid to ask family member to contribute more than just showing up. When everyone works together your family reunion will be a success even if the weather doesn't agree with your plans. About the Author
