Odor Control in Tampa Bay, Florida - Avoiding Smoke Damage through Proper Building Compliance

The Construction Services Division of the City of Tampa has a list of common building code violations in the city. These serve as a warning against building features that can make it easier for fires to occur. When these are the existing conditions present, residents are endangered. In addition to the risk in lives, it also boosts property risks.

An aspect of fires that is particularly persistent is smoke damage. Odor control can be quite difficult to conduct because it involves specialized equipment. Given this, minimizing the risks of fire is still the most convenient and cost-effective way of keeping property values up.

As far as the electrical system of the home or building is concerned, there should be properly sized wind uplift connectors. The Code of Tampa Bay requires for a hurricane connector schedule in order to resist uplift loads.

If the property features a pool, the pool lights should be properly bonded or covered. There should also be proper bonding in the conductive pool shells, perimeter surfaces, and electrical equipment. In fact, all metallic components of the pool should be covered completely in order to get rid of stray currents and lessen the risk for shock potential.

Smoke damage usually occurs from fires that start from improperly managed electrical systems. However, they can also happen from a variety of unexpected reasons. The unpredictable nature of fires is why smoke detectors are vital in any property. The new building code in Tampa Bay requires the use of a smoke detector inside the sleeping quarters, outside the rooms, or in the hallway or corridor on each floor level.

Glass should also be used wisely around the property. They should not be found in hazardous areas such as fire exits or near children's bedrooms. Whenever possible, tempered or laminated glass should be used in all of the doors and shower enclosures. In cases of emergency, the glass can shatter because of the various activities such as members of the fire department rushing in.

Another common building violation is the installation of wrongly sized stair steps and risers. Residential dwellings are required to have risers that are 7 3/4 maximum as well as treads that are at least nine inches in length. Commercial buildings are required to have risers that are at a maximum of seven inches and a minimum of 11 inches for treads.

Smoke damage happens when fires leave behind soot, ash, and a lingering smell. It can be quite difficult to control because the smell can cling to all the different surfaces. The molecules can travel through airconditioning and ventilation systems. Thus, avoidance of the need for cleanup is the best route.

When this is no longer possible, there are ways to get rid of the smell. Calling a professional cleanup company provides access to cleaning materials and equipment. To supplement this, increasing the ventilation by opening doors and windows can help clear out the smell of smoke in the room.
