On Basement Leak Repair And Water Damage Cleanup RepairsSubmitted by englishsunset Tue, 8 Feb 2011
Oh, that terrible feeling when you realize that you have to repair a leak in your basement and you now have a lot of water damage to cleanup. What a mess!
Anyone who has suffered extensive water damage to their basement understands the agony and tremendous amount of work involved to get things back to normal. Sometimes it can take months or even years for the restoration to be completed. Most people are quite busy with work and family and have precious little time or money for such natural disasters. Yet, when disaster strikes, you simply have to react and take care of the problem. Things left to themselves tend to decay, and water damage is one of those things. If neglected, you will very quickly discover that your basement will develop a musty smell. This is a clear indication of black mold and mildew growing. The sooner you can get rid of this problem the better, as it will cause considerable damage to your house and health. If your basement has been flooded, you must take every precaution to remove any wet items from the house so they can dry out. Wet carpets, books, wood, furniture and clothing are all ideal places for mold and mildew to thrive. You might even need to rent a dumpster in order to haul everything damaged away. Some things can be dried out and cleaned up, but often the only option is to destroy it. Using a basement sump pump can really speed up the water damage cleanup process. You might be able to mop with excess water, using rags or a mop, but for extremely wet areas, you need to get a sump pump. This might cost you a bit, but it can save you many hours of grueling labor. Plus, the pump can help to maintain a dry basement later on. As soon as possible, get a qualified contractor over to access the damage and propose a prevention and restoration plan. You not only need to get things cleaned up, but you want to avoid such a disaster in the future. These experts have seen just about every kind of problem and can suggest a plan of action that fits your budget. You may be able to hire him to do certain aspects, and do some others on your own. With some guidance, you probably can do quite a yourself. Check with your homeowners insurance policy to see if you can file a claim. Chances are high that you can, after all, it is homeowners insurance! Sometimes you need to be a little assertive to reach the right person because it seems some companies are reluctant to pay any claims. They are, after all, in the business to make money, not spend it! If you can take advantage of the insurance, by all means do so! You will be able to get things done right, using the best materials and the most appropriate basement waterproofing products.
