3 Reasons To Take Recreational Dance ClassesSubmitted by James Franczek Tue, 26 Oct 2010
When it comes time to put you little ones into dance you are faced with several choices. First, there are a few different styles of dance to choose from. From ballet to jazz and hip-hop, or even specialized programs for toddlers. You will likely need to decide on recreational or competitive dance classes as well. Do you want your child to compete with other kids or would you rather them learn to dance without pressure from their peers. I believe that competition and/or examinations are great for setting goals but can be harmful if introduced at too young an age. Here are 3 reasons why putting your child into recreational dance classes can be better for them than competitive at the beginning.
1) Fun - In order to get really good at any activity you must first enjoy that activity. Think about it, your favorite subject in school is most likely the one that you were the best at. If the dance classes are all about fun then there is a greater chance of your child wanting to continue through the beginning stages of learning. 2) Relaxed Atmosphere - When children are preparing for a competition or exam there can be tremendous pressure to get the dance steps perfect. This pressure can come from their parents, their teachers, their peers, and even from them selves. I'm not saying that proper technique is not important and that kids should do whatever they please. I'm just suggesting that they can learn how to dance without the intense pressure that can come from being judged on their performance. 3) Safety - Young children's bodies, primarily between 3 and 5 years, are still developing. The rigors of many dance styles can be too hard on them physically. This is why it can be better for them to join a class that's designed specifically for young children. The focus in these types of dance classes is on having fun and exploring music and movement. The steps are designed to be easier on their bodies. Also, they often incorporate a wider variety of dance styles giving kids the opportunity to explore different dances before they focus on one in particular. So, if you are considering dance classes for your little one give a little bit more thought to the focus of the dance school you plan to put them in. Does your child thrive on completion and pressure? Or would they enjoy a more relaxed learning environment without the pressures of exams or competition.
