The number of social workers and adoption professionals who strongly agree the benefits of open adoptions are gradually increasing. An open adoption is thought to yield positive effects on the child and his or her adoptive parents and birthparents. Pieces of relevant information can be freely exchanged indirectly or directly in open adoptions.

Studies on open adoption conducted among families who took part in such set-up testified to the many positive benefits brought upon by an open adoption arrangement. Generally, adoptive families claimed that they do not fear or anxious whatsoever if the real birth parents will come and get their adopted child. These adoptive parents stated that it is important to save the child from any confusion as to who is his or her real parents, thus, the child in return can ask whatever difficult questions he or she wants to know about his or her biological parents. Therefore, the difference between adoptive parents and birthparents will be clearly delineated even at the young mind of an adopted child.

Birthparents, on the other hand, feel confident that they made the right decision in giving up their child in exchange of a better life for their offspring. By keeping an open channel of information and communication between adoptive parents and birthparents, a healthy relationship is attained. From which, peace of mind and contentment is not farfetched. In fact, it builds trust and harmony among all parties, even instilling a wonderful effect on the child. What more can a child ask than seeing both his or her adoptive parents and birthparents in an outstanding relationship? This manner also helps the child better understand and accept the whole situation, in which, the child will learn not to hold grudges making him or her an admirable individual.

Open adoptions essentially provide adoptive parents and birthparents enough knowledge about each other. As birthparents gained insight on the kind of people their child will grow up with, they will acquire peace of mind knowing their child is in good hands. Also, birthparents may choose the adoptive parents. Meanwhile, as adoptive parents know who the birthparents are, they will be provided with any genetic information that their adopted child has and this relevant information may prove to be helpful in dealing with possible problems in the future.

The level of openness between adoptive parents and birthparents, as well as the child largely depends on the comfort level of both sets of parents. Communication is the key. An open channel of communication oftentimes comfort and put everyone at ease.
