I have a new idea for a reality show; it can be about being a new mom and what it's really like. There exists a concept that being a new mom means that your are all rosy and happy constantly. There is some truth to that, although new mothers do not always feel happy, and some of them get the ‘baby blues" and a few have postpartum depression.
Do you know over 50% of women feel some form of "baby blues" after they give birth? A lot of women think they they are the only one experiencing these emotions and feel like bad moms, and that's simply not true. Lots of new moms can feel restless, impatient, anxious and irritable after they have a baby. When you think of everything you and the infant have been enduring the past year, then feeling these things shouldn't surprise you. Being pregnant and giving birth are incredibly emotional times, so it is not a surprise you'll feel emotionally drained following childbirth. Do you know the difference between 'baby blues' and postpartum depression? Well the 'baby blues' normally leave as suddenly as they came. Unfortunately for 10% percent of women the symptoms persist. The signs of postpartum depression may include, loss of appetite, fatigue, not being able to focus, emotional lows and highs, sadness, afraid of hurting the baby, or loss of interest or excessive interest in the baby. Understand that women with postpartum do not experience all of these symptoms, they may feel different ones on different days, or even the same symptoms day in and day out. Since moms can believe they should not feel anything but joy, they may start to feel shame and guilt and eventually become isolated. The worst part is no one knows what can cause postpartum depression. Factors like lack of sleep, isolation after the baby is born, anxiety and hormones that disturb the brains chemistry are what some researchers think might cause postpartum depression. The idealic picture on motherhood being this happy joyful thing is not complete. Even though it is all that, it is also the hardest most frustrating and sometimes thankless job you will ever do. Because of these two incompatible ideals you have moms that grow to be quite depressed after giving birth. You might not be able to see that you are suffering from postpartum depression. You might think you feel down because you are working extremely hard and sleeping and showers aren't priorities. You need to pay attention to friends and family who are telling you that they're worried about you. Call your personal doctor immediately when you're seeing the symptoms in your own life. You will find many organizations out there which can help, however you still need to see your physician. Don't feel ashamed or guilty. Postpartum depression is common and with help and support from your doctor and loved ones you will be feeling better soon. Be aware that a lot of women experience the "baby blues" but if you're experiencing these symptoms for an extended time of time call your doctor. You need to maintain your health for your new little baby.
