Shoppers Guide to Buying Car Seats for BabiesSubmitted by John Lewis Mon, 11 Jan 2010
Everyone wants to be sure they have the latest and safest in safety devices for their little ones. It is always a good idea to have a guide to knowing what options there are, and how to find the best for your baby.
First, you will need to scope out the backseat of your vehicle so that you can get a good idea of how much space is available for a car seat. If necessary, measure the seat, legroom, etc. Since some car seats are made differently, they may not fit all vehicles the same. You will also need to know if your vehicle is equipped with a LATCH system. LATCH is an acronym for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. Since 2003 most vehicles are equipped with this safety tool. On any or all seats in the backseat, there will be two anchors located in the 'crack' of the seat where you normally find seat belt fasteners. The top tether should be located in the rear window dash just above the backseats. Most car seats today are compatible with LATCH to ensure the utmost safety for your child. When searching for a car seat for your baby, you also want something that is sure to be comfortable and well-fitting. Some car seats come with padding that is removable in certain areas but can become tighter as your child grows. For example, a head and neck support for a smaller baby may be removed when it is no longer necessary. You can also find some with removable padding in the seat area when the buckles become too tight. For optimum cleanliness, it would also be smart to find a seat with completely removable padding that is washable. In case of a spill or accident that is almost inevitable with any child. If looks are important to you, you will be pleased to know that it is easy to find a car seat that falls into these categories in just about any colour. Let your child help you choose a fun pattern you can both enjoy, or go with a sleek colour to match the interior of your vehicle. For your convenience, some car seats come with organisational accessories, like cup holders and caddies for anything you may need right away. This is great for those families always on-the-go. It is also very important to know what type of car seat you will need. Rear-facing car seats are required for newborns up until 30 pounds, or until the child's head reaches the top of the seat. Your safest bet is to use a rear-facing seat as long as possible. Front-facing seats are acceptable for toddlers up until this seat is outgrown; then a booster seat is all that is necessary. Lastly, you may be considering a used car seat from a thrift or consignment store, or from a private individual. This is acceptable, just be sure it still has all original parts and is not in poor condition. Check all straps and buckles for wear and tear. Avoid any car seats that has frayed or torn straps and missing parts. Wherever you may choose to purchase your child's car seat, just be sure to cover all the above mentioned bases and it will be much easier to make a good choice. After all, nothing is more important than keeping our children safe when we sometimes cannot. Keep this in mind when shopping and you are sure to be satisfied with your decision.
