Cockapoo Training: Housebreaking Tips

If you are planning to have a pet, then most probably the thought of having a cuddly cockapoo makes you want to go to the nearest pet shop or rescue group to meet the soon-to-be member of the family. But before the excitement prompt you to do anything, take time first to assess yourself as pet owner. Be reminded that having a pet is a long-term commitment. You cannot just bring home a cockapoo then return him after a week if you noticed that your cockapoo training is not doing well. Once you have made sure that you are capable owner, then it's about time you bring home that furry creature.

After the welcome party, you definitely know what the next move is - cockapoo training. When training your puppy to potty appropriately, you need to understand that young puppies have limited bowel and urinary control. They cannot hold it until around ten to 12 weeks of age thus constant supervision is needed to prevent your pet from relieving in prohibited places as much as possible. During this period, you may need to bring him out to potty no less than five times a day. To prevent accident inside the house, take him out after waking up in the morning, after drinking or eating, after exercise, play and other activities, when nervous or excited and before going to bed at night. If your pup cannot eliminate right after he is taken out, the best thing to do is to wait for around ten minutes until he does. Give reward immediately. If that is not the case, bring him back inside and wait for a few more minutes but keep an eye on him for he may show signs to convey that he needs to do his thing. These signs include sniffing the floor, walking around in circles or suddenly running out of sight. Immediately bring him to the designated spot when you see any of these signs. Give reward right after he has eliminated to make him understand that he has done the right thing - which is to eliminate at that specified spot.

When you see a pool of urine or a pile of poop inside the house, it is not a good idea to punish your cockapoo for it, especially if the deed was done hours before you discover it. He will not understand why you are scolding him. Instead, just ignore the dog and clean the mess thoroughly to prevent him from doing his thing in exactly the same spot. To correct his behavior, catch him in the act but instead of giving punishment, make a noise in order to distract him. Take him to the designated spot at once and let him finish there. Give rewards if he does.
