Cockapoo Training: Training the Older Dog

Submitted by RichardC

Almost everybody have heard the saying, "You can't teach old dog new tricks". As such, many believe that older dogs are indeed unable to grasp new lessons taught to them. This could possibly be true in some cases but what is true to the other doesn't mean the same to other dogs. With proper cockapoo training, you will soon find out that the aged dog you thought will never learn is actually doing well in every command you give.

The first step to train your older cockapoo is to assess the physical limitations. Know that poodles and cocker spaniels can suffer from luxating patellas and eye disorders such as progressive retinal atrophy. These issues, if not detected and given necessary measures may hinder not only cockapoo training but your pet's health and happiness in general. Start the ball rolling if you are certain that your pet is physically fit for training.

The number one secret to have effective cockapoo training is to make sure that you have your pet's attention. To make sure that your pet's attention is entirely focused on you and on the training, select a location that is quiet and free of distractions. Speeding cars, passersby and children playing will more likely attract your pet's attention.

If you adopted an older dog from a rescue shelter, it is possible that the dog has already been potty trained by previous owners or by volunteers from rescue groups. If that is not the case, then potty training must be started as soon as possible. One good thing about potty training older dogs is that, they already have more control of their bladder and bowel. They are able to hold it for longer periods of time compared to puppies. To start potty training your new pet, introduce him to the spot where he is supposed to do his thing - his bathroom. Take him to his bathroom when you see him sniffing or walking in circles. These signs are some of the indications that he needs to urinate or defecate. Give the command "go potty" when you are at the area. Give rewards and praise if he does. Accident is inevitable... and if it does happen, always remember not to punish your pet. Instead, clean the mess immediately to prevent him from doing it there again.

Be gentle when training your older dog and understand that they are no longer puppies. They may not have the energy to do things puppies are doing and some may already be suffering from issues related to old age. But despite that fact, an older cockapoo has the potential of becoming a man's loyal and best friend with the help of proper cockapoo training.
