Entropion: A Common Eye Problem Among Shar Peis

Sharpeis, though once named as one of the world's rarest dog breeds, have managed to find their way to the hearts of many people, expert or first time dog owners. They may appear snobbish snd suspicious to strangers but in general, this breed makes a loving and devoted family dog. But no matter how tough they seem to appear, the possibility of getting health diseases always gives dog owners something to worry about.

Sharpeis have deep-set eyes that tend to wear. While tearing is not always a sign of eye problem, this could possibly cause entropion, one of the common health problems affecting this breed. Entropion is a painful eye condition in which the eyelashes curl inward and scratch the surface of the cornea. This can be very painful and causes corneal ulcers and erosions. This may also cause corneal scarring and may lead to blindness if not treated properly. A dog affected with entropion will squint and tear excessively however, some dogs show no obvious signs that the disease existed.

Entropion can be treated through surgery. The process usually involves removing the excessive folds and sections of facial skin as well as tightening the eyelids so that the eyelashes will no longer in contact with the cornea. After surgery, entropion rarely recur in most breeds except in breeds prone to it such as sharpeis. Surgical procedure is not recommended, unless necessary, to dogs less that one year of age.

Know that another reason for the occurrence of entropion is having eyes that can be very sensitive to allergies. With this, it is therefore important to track down the allergens (dust, smoke) and do away with them.

Entropion can occur to puppies six months of age and is also common to other breeds such as Akita, Pug, Chow-Chow, St. Bernard, Cocker Spaniel, Boxer, Labrador Retriever, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Great Dane, Rottweiler and Poodle.

Providing luxurious lifestyle such as expensive beds, designer clothes and other stuff will not contribute to the dog's longevity and good quality life in general - proper care, attention and careful breeding will! It is therefore important that owners and future Shar Pei owners are well aware of the diseases that could possibly affect the breed and how to treat and prevent those diseases.
