In cases where children have been neglected and abused, there is a cycle of abuse that becomes perpetuated in their own lives. Learning to care for animals can place them in the role of a nurturer, which breaks that cycle. Learning to love and care for another being is a very powerful gift for those children.

Caring for wounded animals is a experience that carries a very similar weight. When children are allowed to care for a puppy or a dog that is injured, they often relate to the animal, as they themselves might feel they are injured or broken in some way. As the animal heals, it has a certain power of transference in helping the child to heal their own wounds. Children who have suffered abuse or neglect in the past can also benefit from these experiences.
