NFL Dog Collars: Why Stop There?Submitted by urlreader Tue, 18 Nov 2008
When it comes to dog collars, there is an abundance of styles you could potentially have your pooch wear. In fact, there are just about as many types of dog collars as there are breeds of dogs. From spiked dog collars to NFL dog collars, there is virtually no end to the type of adornments you can put around your dog's neck.
Much of what you have to take into consideration when choosing a collar for your dog has to do with your dog's individual needs and behaviors. For instance, if your dog is a show dog, they might wear a metal show collar. These thin slip collars are usually made of braided nylon, cotton, leather, hex or serpentine metal chain. Slip collars have "O" rings at either end and a lead is usually attached to one of the rings to tighten or loosen the collar with pressure from the lead. Slip (show) collars are not to be confused with choke chains which are generally thicker, heavier, and used for training purposes. Other types of collars include break-away collars and limited slip collars. These types are designed for safety purposes for dogs who tend to "slip" or get hung up on their collars. Such collars are usually made of nylon, and can come in a variety of colors and designs. If your pooch already wears MLB dog jerseys, why not find him a break-away collar to match? If you can't find a Nascar dog collar in the form of one of these specialty collars, you can always settle for a standard buckle collar, which is just what it sounds like--a collar that is fastened with a brass or plastic buckle. Some collars are more breed-specific, like Martingales, which are basically slip collars that are better suited to toy breeds and often used in dog shows. Other collars are more appropriate for training or "correcting" dogs with behavior issues; these include pinch or prong collars, which yank the neck when pressure is applied, and electronic collars, which deliver an electric stimulus when a dog disobeys or crosses certain physical boundaries. As you can clearly see, there are a number of options for dog collars. If you're not sure which type to get, do some research or ask your vet about what works best for your breed. Perhaps your dog has certain behaviors--like excessive lead pulling--which require you to use a certain type of collar. Either way, you can be sure that you can find decorative collars in all forms, from a Nascar dog collar to a fancy leather harness. About the Author
