Pit Bulls - Are they good pets to own?

Pit Bull! Just the name strikes fear when people hear it but if you're looking for home security that's a good thing. They can be very loyal pets but if you plan to own one there are some things to consider. Pits Bulls aren't your average, ordinary pets. While they can be loving and friendly they can also be stubborn and aggressive. As with any breed, obedience training is important but more so due to their potentially aggressive behavior. Training should begin while still a puppy and their behavior can still be developed. Typically they are very intelligent but they tend to lose focus so plan to be patient. It is strongly recommended that you follow a training program specifically designed to address the breeds' specific needs.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is considered to be the only true breed of dog that can be called a Pit Bull although there are several types. This typical breed is a very muscular, medium sized dog weighing in a range between 35-65 lbs. Some are bred for show, work or pets but some owners buy because of their protective nature.

The breed has a bad reputation due to attack incidents and negative media exposure about those trained for fighting but many owners will attest to the social nature of the breed. Pit Bulls do have strong personalities and demand a lot of attention but many owners and their families have had years of ownership with no problems.

Responsible Pit Bull owners who dedicate the time and proper training techniques will be rewarded with a loyal companion and friend for many years.
