Preventing Heatstroke In Labrador Retrievers

Submitted by RichardC

Summer is great time for Labrador Retrievers! Imagine all the fun they will experience retrieving balls or sticks outdoor. But as much as it is fun, it is also the time when the temperature rises. With all the fun and excitement summer brings, you must not forget to do something to prevent your dog from overheating.

Heatstroke is not something to be ignored because it is dangerous and can kill your dog if not treated immediately. It can cause serious damage to their internal organs and intestinal tracts.

The normal body temperature of a dog is between 101 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit. They are different from humans when they sweat. They regulate their body temperature through panting, expelling the heat out. However, his body temperature arises when he cannot expel the heat fast enough. Danger in overheating occurs when your dog's body temperature is three degrees more than the normal body temperature. So if your dog's body temperature is 105 degrees Fahrenheit, you better act immediately to treat this emergency.

Extreme panting with rapid breathing and warm, dry skin are early signs of heatstroke. Dry mouth and nose and high fever can be also present. In more severe cases, dull, grayish-pink or red gums can be seen instead of a normal healthy red-pink color. These symptoms can be followed by collapse, seizures, shock or loss of consciousness, coma, and worst death.

Upon notice of signs of heatstroke, get your dog out of the sun and move him to a cooler place. Place him in a bowl of cool, not cold water. Give him a small amount of water to drink and take him to the vet as soon as possible. Your vet will continue treating your dog by administering fluids and may also include antibiotics and steroids.

Fortunately, it is possible to prevent this problem. Provide easy access to a cool, fresh water at all times. Place at least two bowls filled with water anywhere around the house but do not leave the bowls in the sun. Place them in shaded areas and change the water regularly. Avoid exercise and other outdoor activities during the heat of the day.

Although it is not advisable, when you take your dog with you outside, shopping or doing errands, bring water for him to drink. Also if you are leaving him in the car, Leave your car windows open, so air can blow through your car. Do not turn off the air conditioner. But as much as possible, do not leave your dog in the car if you will be gone the whole day. Most cases of heatstroke are caused by dogs left in the cars, crates or kennels.

Playing with your Labrador Retrievers under the sun is fun as long as precautions are taken to prevent heatstroke.
