We are fast approaching that time of the year where Garden Ants and Wasps begin their nesting seasons. Spring is the prime part of the year where the temperature becomes slighter warmer & seasonal pests get ready for the summer ahead.

Wasps

Wasps are common throughout Britain. Wasps are social insects, forming colonies inside nests specially constructed in the ground, in cavities, trees and walls, and very frequently in roof spaces. Wasps are approx. 10 to 20 mm long and have the famous black and yellow stripes. Wasps are probably the only insect that everybody knows instantly, and what it is capable of doing, delivering painful and sometimes fatal stings.

The main hazard of wasps is the risk of 'anaphylactic shock' which can arise from even a single wasp sting. Wasps also visit dustbins, waste depots and dead animal bodies which can lead to the spread of disease and contamination of foodstuffs.

An Electric Fly Killer can be a highly efficient tool to combat fly infestation as well as being an effective wasp killer. 24 Hour protection against flying insects such as wasps & flies can be provided for rental or supply and service.

How does the Electric Fly Killer work?

The tubes within the electric fly killer draw the flying insect towards it through the UV light. Once electrocuted the fly falls into a collection trap, which should be emptied regularly as part of routine maintenance.

Electronic fly killers are often the last line of defence or the only means of control. When used for monitoring purposes, their role is equally critical. Maintenance of proper effectiveness is essential. They are designed to be simple to maintain and clean, and for maximum efficiency.

The tubes should be changed at least once per year since the phosphur coating, which produces the UV, deteriorates with use.

Ants

Garden Ants are found in many parts of the world, and frequently throughout the UK close to and in association with man's dwellings. Ants have a well defined social structure and a wide range of tastes. It is usually the sexually infertile female ants, the workers, that are seen away from the nest. Ant's nests may survive for many years but young queens leave the nest as 'flying ants' and start new ones each year.
Foraging worker ants can become a nuisance but not normally a health risk unlike some of the tropical ants such as the Pharaoh's Ant. Sexual forms, 'flying ants' may emerge in large numbers close to or inside houses and other buildings.

Pharoah's Ants feed on meat, cheese, fats, sugar, honey, jam, chocolate and blood. Pathogenic organisms may be transmitted mechanically as the ants feed in unhygienic places including drains, refuse bins and wound dressings. Colonies range from a few dozen to a 300,000 strong ant infestation.
