In the United States there are tons of individuals who own farms and ranches. On these farms they grow corn and wheat as well as other things. They likewise may raise creatures like pigs, chickens, and cows. Every farm is distinct and many of them care for these creatures before selling them off for meat or using their milk to produce cheese or for people who enjoy to consume milk.

One kind of farming that we normally do not know about much is ostritch farming. The ostritch is a flightless bird that we all know and viewed on National Geographic shows - but rarely are they seen. In fact many of us cannot even know why or how they are being farmed and sold for meat like cows and pigs.

The ostritch is thought to be a free ranging farm animal that does not need much upkeep once they have reached four months old. In fact several of these farmers believe that they are one of the best environmentally friendly animals because they do not need as much food.

More than one hundred countries have placed money into these farms and have worked long and hard to make a living from them. In the early 1990's it was regarded to be really lucrative - but it did not take long for the business to die down because there was not enough who wanted their product. Without anybody to buy from them most of the farms were pressured to shut down.

Still, not everything is hopeless. The few ostritch farms that are still around in the United States are asking the authorities to make things simpler for them. They think that if the USDA were to scrutinize the meat as they do with cows or pigs then the marketing price could be lowered. People would be much more prepared to purchase from them if the price were set to a lower amount. For now all they are able to do is wait and trust that something is done speedily.

Ostritches are a type of flightless bird and are very unusual. That is why it is unusual to hear about Ostritch Farms.
