Zootoo (Animal Shelter Makeover Contest)

Zootoo House is an organization whose mission is to improve the condition of animal shelters, facilitate adoptions, and make the shelter visit a loving, safe, and positive experience for children and adults. Currently they are running a contest nationwide, and the contest is designed to increase exposure for shelters, to encourage adoption, donations and volunteers. The competition is designed to provide pet lovers with the opportunity to rate and review pet products, read other pet owner's reviews, locate services, and connect to shelters that need volunteers. Once registered, Zootoo members earn Zootoo Points for writing these reviews, referring new members, or volunteering in shelters.


This easy to use site connects volunteers with shelters in their area and provides an interactive map to show where particular services are located. The Web site's visitors must validate their registration, once the validation is e-mailed, in order to provide additional points for the shelter. Signing up gives the shelter of your choice 100 points, and extra points are awarded for agreeing to volunteer, referring a friend, and writing a review.


The 20 shelters that accumulate the most points between October 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008, will be eligible to win the makeover or runners-up cash prizes. A second shelter will win a $10,000 cash prize, and the 18 other top shelters will each receive $5,000. The winner will be announced in May, after Zootoo founder Richard Thompson, previously the CEO of Meow Mix cat food, inspects the winning shelters with Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, and other industry experts.


Actual makeover value depends on the condition of the shelter and judgment of Zootoo House. Pet lovers across America will nominate deserving shelters by becoming active members on Zootoo. The shelter I'm personally supporting is "The Second Chance Animal Shelter" in East Brookfield Ma. and is currently number three, and striving for the shelter make-over. I am a volunteer there, and so happy to be a part of helping our shelter win this contest. The sheer number of shelters participating in this Zootoo contest demonstrates how many shelters really need financial assistance to help enable them to pursue their cause. Even though I'm a volunteer at "The Second Chance Animal Shelter, and would love to see them win, I honestly believe "EVERY SHELTER" is deserving, provided that the money is used very carefully with only the best interests of the animals at heart.
