Pregnancy is one of the most unique times of a woman's life. To ensure that the pregnancy is a healthy one, women should take proactive steps along the way. While ideally women should visit their health care providers before their pregnancy to boost their overall health, there are several actions that women can take during their pregnancy to increase their overall state of health, and the babies upon delivery.

Here are some of the top tips for a healthy pregnancy:

1. Exercise- While it is recommended to begin an exercise routine prior to becoming pregnant, exercising is considered not only safe, but healthy for the mother during pregnancy. Walking, running, biking and swimming along with light weights can enhance the health of the mother's body. And, there are some studies showing that exercising during pregnancy can improve the delivery experience. Most physicians will not recommend beginning a rigorous exercise routine if the woman has not been regularly participating in such a routine in the past. But, many women who regularly run or participate in other routines weekly are encouraged to continue until they are uncomfortable or further along in their pregnancy.

2. Eat Healthy Foods- While this would seem like common sense, many women take being pregnant as a free for all to start eating junk. But, in reality, no time is as important for healthy eating as pregnancy. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy and lean protein in your diet on a daily basis. Food types should be varied to both keep the diet interesting and to vary the nutritional value ingested during pregnancy. Contrary to popular belief, pregnant women do not require a significant increase in daily calories, so it is important to balance both the quality and quantity of food during pregnancy. And, take a daily multivitamin so that any vitamins and minerals missed in the daily diet can be ingested.

3. Read- You will not only experience changes in your body during pregnancy, but changes in your relationship and your lifestyle. Read to learn about what to expect both before and after the delivery to prepare yourself. You will find a wealth of reading materials available both at your local bookstore and online that will help you to prepare for the pregnancy and for what follows. Consider talking to other moms and to your physician for reading recommendations as well.

4. Follow Instructions- Your physician will provide you with instructions on what to do during your pregnancy, including when to visit them for routine checkups. Follow all instructions and proactively ask questions in the event that you have concerns about your pregnancy.

Pregnancy is an exciting time within a woman's life. So many changes occur within the body as well as within their family dynamic. There so many variables to consider when planning for a healthy, happy pregnancy. Women who are considering becoming pregnant or who have just discovered that they are, often search for information about what to do next to ensure a healthy delivery. Follow the simple tips above to improve your overall pregnancy experience.
