In order to stay safe and comfortable in the car when pregnant, there are several safety measures to take as highlighted below:

.If your bump is really big and practically touching the steering wheel, it is time to stop driving and arrange for someone to chauffeur you instead as it is generally the safest option.

.Another aspect to driving safely when pregnant is where and how you're sat. If you're sat in the passenger seat at the front then put your seat as far away from the airbag as possible so that you have plenty of space including leg room. This space will allow you to feel more comfortable as well as have a bit of movement during a longer journey.

.If you have ever been on a plane ride you should have been advised on some of the exercises they recommend for long flights. Try to do some of them, such as moving your feet in circular motions to help prevent as well as ease swelling in the feet or possibly the whole leg.

.Also, ensure that you have a seat belt on. If you don't have one on then you are putting yourself and your baby at risk as well as breaking the law. Ensure that the seatbelt lap strap sits under your bump and across your pelvis. Then ensure that the shoulder part of the seatbelt is above your pregnancy bump and between your breasts.

.During pregnancy, women tend to get dehydrated fairly quickly so when going on any journey whether it's walking or by car, try and take some water with you to keep yourself hydrated.

.Plan the journey and ensure that plenty of breaks have been incorporated into the journey time to account for toilet breaks as well as being able to stretch your legs and keeping the blood circulation flowing around your body.

.Backaches are quite common during pregnancy so try to take spare pillows with you for comfort. Special pregnancy wedge pillows can also be purchased, they are perfect for backaches.

.Breakdown cover is fairly important, especially more when you're pregnant because you don't want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere with minimal help on hand. Always keep those important magic numbers on hand with you so that you have them in emergencies.

.Finally, if you are more than six months pregnant then seek medical advice before going on any longer journeys.
